Gemstone of the month is—Prehnite—the first mineral to hold the distinction of being named after an individual! Although this gemstone has a long history, it was discovered at the Cape of Good Hope by Dutch military commander and mineralogist Colonel Hendrik von Prehn in 1774 and subsequently classified and given formal recognition in mineralogical literature in the late 1700s. Prior to this classification, it was known as Cape Emerald or Grape Jade due to its typical apple green coloration (although it can vary in hue from green to white and can even be found in a colorless variety).
Primarily found in the veins and cavities of basaltic and volcanic rocks, this beautiful gemstone is located throughout the world in places ranging from Eastern Cape, South Africa to the Wave Hill Station in Australia and including parts of China and India. And Scotland, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
Did I mention it could also be found in Canada and the US?
Okay, so Prehnite is not a rare gemstone, but it is a particularly powerful one! Widely known as the Stone of Prophecy or the Healer's Stone—prehnite is valued in both European and African traditions for ability to quiet the mind, sharpen foresight, and enhance intuitive "knowing." It is often associated with the Archangel Raphael and believed to protect, restore, and replenish the energy of those who provide emotional and spiritual support to others.
Not only is it utilized in dreamwork and intuition, but prehnite is believed to carry a soothing frequency that eases stress and anxiety, fostering an inner peace that is associated with unconditional love and calmness. In addition, it is thought to provide emotional repair and engender compassion.
By serving as a primary anchor to open up pathways for compassion and forgiveness, it is most often linked with the Heart Chakra, but prehnite also has connections with the Solar Plexus Chakra by bridging personal willpower to the hearts loving intent. Likewise, prehnite is affiliated with the Third Eye Chakra where it is believed to support subtle perception, inner vision and prophetic insight.
Guess that explains the name Stone of Prophecy.
With a Mohs hardness of 6-6.5, prehnite is often used in making jewelry and household items and it's prevalence throughout the world makes prehnite easy to find. Why I even found it at Just Witchys where you too can discover the beauty of this gemstone!
