Persephone is the Greek Goddess of fertility, vegetation, and the underworld. In mythology she was abducted by Hades and made queen of the underworld, in her grief her mother caused winter and death of vegetation. A compromise was made having Persephone stay in the underworld a third of the year thus explaining the seasons. She is often depicted as a young woman carrying a sheaf of wheat and a pomegranate.
