Oshun is the Yoruba goddess (orisha) of rivers, purity, fertility, love, marriage, beauty, and sensuality. In the creation story the original orishas failed to bring life to the world until Oshun blessed the world with her sweet (fresh) water. Osogbo in Nigeria is her sacred city as it is said she gave permission to build the city along her river vowing to protect them and grant prayers. In this city lies the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, a world heritage site that contains shrines to and artwork of Oshun.
