Hel is the ancient Norse Goddess of death and guardian of the realm of the dead, Helheim or Niflheim. She is a daughter of the God Loki and the giantess Angrboda and is said to be giant herself. In myth hel is seen as cruel and unfeeling to the plights of humans, gods, and the souls in her charge. The most famous example of this was in the tale “The Death of Baldur” where she refuses to let the god live again until everyone and thing in the universe wept for his death. The tale ends with one Giantess (suspected to be her father Loki) refuses to cry for the slain God and thus Baldur must remain in the land of the dead.
