Babalu Aye Orisha of Disease and Healing

Babalu Aye is the Orisha of illness, both causing and curing all sickness. In traditional African depictions he is a muscular man with a crutch covered head to toe in braided raffia (mariwó) curtains to cover his extensive scaring from smallpox. American and Caribbean traditions add dogs to his depiction due to his association with Saint Lazarus. The children of Babalu Aye are healers, often scarred like him, who have an aptitude for both medical and spiritual healing.
