Anubis is the Egyptian god of the afterlife, mummification, and is the patron god of lost souls and the helpless. The name "Anubis" is the Greek form of the Egyptian Anpu (or Inpu) which meant "to decay" signifying his early association with death. He is depicted as a black canine or as a muscular man with the head of a jackal. The color black was chosen because it symbolized the decay of the body as well as the fertile soil near the Nile which represented protection, regeneration, and life. Anubis had the unenviable task of weighing the guilt of the deceased by comparing the weight of their heart against the feather of truth. Those who were found to be guiltless were led to the afterlife, the condemned were devoured by Ammit, the goddess of
