Medusa is one of the Gorgon sisters who in early myths was born cursed like her sisters. In later mythology she was cursed by Athena and became the only gorgon. Medusa’s most famous myth is of her slaying by the divinely aided hero Perseus. In many versions of this story Medusa is beheaded and her children Pegasus and Chrysaor sprang from her severed neck.

Medusa is said to be a protector of victims of rape and incest, she is also a fierce protector of women's rights.
